I got a special offering from graphic designer Mark Goldsworthy
who made the poster of "SAFE SEX with JIMMY PAGE". So I'll introduce this
special band with some photos (taken by Mark, very rare!) and original
poster of this gig. Jimmy played with jam band named "SAFE SEX (Jason
Bonham on Drums, Mike Thompsom on Vocals and Dennis De Bass on bass)",
they played at Heartbreak Hotel, Ibiza, San Antonio, Spain in 1986
("Heartbreak Hotel" is the Nightclub owned by Phil Carson, who was once
Atlantic Records man, also famous as guest bass player on many ZEPP's
gigs).
Then, I have a bootleg source from this gig, Jimmy
played famous telecaster with string bender (except on "White Summer", he
played Dan Electro on this song). The songs they played were almost all
R&R classics like "I just wanna make love to you" or "Money", they
were generally played as an encore by THE FIRM (they broke up few months
before this gig). Phil Carson played Bass on "Lucille", they also played
"Heartbreak Hotel", perhaps a tribute to this club. Mark told me the
interesting story about the poster of this gig.
"Here's the story of
the two posters: I made the first one using a copy of a photo of Jimmy
given to me by Jenny Carson (Phil's wife). This was printed and delivered
to Heartbreak. Jimmy freaked when he eventually saw it, for two reasons;
One, he wanted the band name biggest. Two, he hated the photo. Jimmy
sweats a lot when he plays and he didn't approve of a sweaty photo, a
personal thing. I thought it looked OK, a little sweat, pay yer dues, all
that. Sooo, panic. Jenny got another photo sent out from London and I had
2hrs to re-make the the poster." I recognized that final version's photo
is from the "ARMS Concert US Tour" (boot video of this concert available,
Jimmy with same costume), and rejected one is form "Knebworth 1979". I
asked Mark where did the band's name, "SAFE SEX" come from? "Probably
because at that time the AIDS thing was really getting known, just a
guess", I agree with him on it.
Also
he remembered that R.Plant was at Ibiza year before this gig to film the
video for "Sea of Love" (Mark got to contribute one small scene for it. he
said "R.Plant was real gentleman"). Ibiza was a popular place for Page and
Plant at this time.
Anyway, these stories and pictures of "SAFE SEX"
are great discovery for any ZEPP's fan, I believe. Thanks Mark!
