| Notes
from Winston: I was contacted last summer by an FBO member named Wayne
Catalde. He let me know that he had the Cassettes and I was welcome to remaster them for a future tree as his way of giving back to the
Zep Community. I was honored to do so. I know many of you Zep fans probably have 1/2 dozen versions
of this historic show. The story behind these Cassettes is what makes this so special to me. From
the local tape shop were Mike bought his blanks. A person working there noticed this same guy coming in
and buying up big amounts of blanks. He asked what they were for and Millard told him that he taped concerts.
They became friends and made a deal, Free blanks for Mikes taped shows. I have listened to alot of "low gen" sources for this show. They all have "Millard
Markings" most common are cuts during No Quarter & Guitar solo. Those 2 songs are complete. Mike would also put in pulse channel
dropouts after his tape flips & and would put silent spots on some of the songs. I guess that is how he kept track of his trades. These are clean from those "Markings" and they are the best sounding of all the low gen versions I have heard. I want to thank Wayne for letting me remaster this show. I asked him to watch this thread and answer any questions or comments you might have.

| This is the famous Listen
to this Eddie tape with the Video from Seattle 17th 1977 !? |
| .The Audio is as usual
from GM in Linear PCM (technical info below) |
| In my Opinion GM
should have added stills and not the Seattle Video |
|
|
Quote from the
Underground Uprising Webmaster "I
got this technical information from Black Dog to explain why you get
better sound from a DVD rather than a CD":
"Linear PCM audio Format on DVD discs is the preferred choice
as Linear PCM is not a Compressed / Lossy format. Linear PCM is the same
audio format that is used on the High-End SACD (Super Audio CD). All
other audio formats that can be applied to a DVD like...AC-3, DTS, &
MPEG to name the most common are all Compressed/Lossy formats. In other
words the audio is encoded downwards in bit rate and in turn to some
degree (depending on the audio format and compression applied) the
quality is reduced. 95% of DVD titles being produced do not feature
audio in Linear PCM. One other benefit of Linear PCm is the fact that it
retains the tonal dynamics and range of the audio source. In essence if
your audio source has a wide dynamic range and doesn't display any
distortion during playback (if output dB is correctly set) then Linear
PCM will only enhance the playback a further step. Unfortunately most
DVD's and Music CD's feature their audio at too high a dB output level
and this causes in many instances a loss of dynamic range and at worse
digital clipping and distortion. One WaLTTE
customer proclaimed that no matter how loud he turned the volume dial up
on WaLTTE there was no distortion, to
his surprise considering the type of recording. This is proof of how it
can be done right and the benefits of ensuring all aspects of the
material is at the correct setting and format.
There is a technique I developed several years ago that is capable
of lifting the natural dynamics of the audio source. It is not a EQ
process that can have destructive aspects if applied at the wrong level.
It is a process that can be applied to certain recordings that display
unique characteristics that allow this process to work. The easy part is
working out which recordings and even which individual songs that this
new technique can be applied to. The hard part is the actual
process being applied. It can take for example 1 hour to tackle only 10
seconds of audio. As the WaLTTE audio was
indeed perfect to apply this process this concert recording clocked up
well over 300 hours in the studio to get it as right as can be (maybe it
got up to 500 hours, I lost count). For the right recording and the
right concert this amount of hours in the studio was well worth the
effort. "Live On Blueberry Hill" was
the other concert that received this full treatment with astounding
success. The other concerts/titles released to date only had mild
treatment as their benefit would have been only marginal and at the
edges. Though I use the technique I created to enhance/restore these
recordings, one needs to have any 'ear' to ensure you don't go too far
in the application of this treatment. What I've done is in essence do
what a Recording Engineer would do to a Studio recording and make sure
that all instruments are properly balanced and defined. The lead guitar
for example shouldn't overpower the rest of the band. Too many
recordings when their source has been EQ'd seem to lift up the presence
of the lead guitar but in the process they damage the surrounding music.
For WaLTTE (as with all other titles) the
audio on our DVD discs and on our CDR discs are all from the same
master audio file on computer. Some people have commented that the DVD
discs display a better dynamic range and brillance than the CDRs. This
is in fact a true observation. The reason is simple. The Linear PCM
format is of such a higher standard (higher sample rate) that it
stores more bytes of information (music). It's like comparing a MP3 file
of a song that had been encoded at 128-bits to a 160-bit version. The
128-bit version will sound CD quality but the 160-bit version will sound
just that much better in dynamic range and depth". |

| Hot Wacks
online on the Underground Uprising website:
This
will be the most desired version of this notorious concert. The show
has been booted to death but Genuine Masters had the only
reason to issue it again....a superior tape. For Badgeholders
Only from GM utilizes an extremely low-generation Mike
Millard recording and providing it in the DVD-Audio medium is the
only way to hear it. Led Zeppelin collectors all hold this show in
high regard, whether it was simply the impromptu appearance of Keith
Moon towards the last third of the concert, the superior versions
of Sick Again and No Quarter, etc...or just the
magnificent recording. This is my 4th copy of this show and I was
expecting GM to provide the definitive version when FBO
was announced ... and they, once again, have lived up to expectations!
The recording isn't quite as striking as GM's "Watch
And Listen To This Eddie", at first. However, it does
expand as the tape/disc moves along. As with the Tarantura release
last year, "Sgt. Page's Badgeholder's",
it's the robust bottom end that is noticable ... as well as the
atmosphere around the taper. With this version of FBO, you REALLY feel
right in the middle of the proceedings! While this recording doesn't
quite have the spatial qualities as WaLTTE, this
title really can be categorized as definitive. I cannot commend the
label enough for it's selection and use of pictures for this project.
Again GM has included some scarcely utilized or rarely circulated
shots, along with a few of the common ones. The only deduction on the
scorecard here is that there are no photos utilized from this concert!
There are numerous pics of Keith Moon and John Bonham drumming in
tandem and that would have made the package absolutely complete. A
shame really. The rest holds up as you would hope.Another benchmark of
the labels' expertise progressing, is the incredibly wonderful
interactive menus. GM utilizes the Seattle '77 video in the
background, while featuring various '77 images for the scene selection
tabs. Everything looks so rich and colorful. A really stellar
production throughout.
While the audio CDR's that are offered with every release are
recommended, you will not reap the auditory rewards with these FBO
audio discs like you will with the DVD-Audio. However, it all still
rocks! And if that isn't enough, the label is also giving collector's
a nice thank you freebie with your order. Genuine Masters is
offering a free VHS-to-DVDR version of AC/DC's "Let There
Be Rock" film to all who order FBO. A nice offer on top
of an essential acquisition. ("SVENGI" Webmaster

| dadgad comments: On the original transfer
there´s a small cut at the beginning of Kashmir, I patched in the missing portion of music taking it from ton185's 2nd gen.
transfer of the same source torrented by pmonk66 at TTD. The remaining of the transfer is unaltered.
I also didn't include Moby Dick at the end of disc 2 even if it's present
on the original CDR.
